To sleep or not to sleep

First- A moment of silence to acknowledge and celebrate that Lydia’s birth story was completed within her first month of life………… Thank you. Minor miracle. Decent sized victory. Major mommy win.

Time for a poll: Is anyone else ready for this blog to turn into a daily or at least multiple posts a week kind of blog where I ramble about my family’s day to day life and other unnecessary nonsense. GREAT me too! Polling has officially closed. I most certainly would love to stop writing retrospective novels every few weeks…

Today we will discuss sleep because last night we essentially didn’t.

Q: Is Lydie sleeping?

A: I’d say approximately an average of yes. Last night an average of no. She has her moments, and her nights where she’d prefer to be eating at intervals that mommy doesn’t care for… But on a normal basis she gives us a few 2-3 hour chunks of the heavenly experience society calls ‘sleep’ and new parents call ‘what?’ During the day, she sleeps all morning and spends the afternoon either alert and super cute or alert and super cranky (depending on her mood du jour). Evening time is for sleeping in the arms of visitors and night is for a few sleep chunks, feverishly chugging milk, acquiring gas bubbles and releasing them in the face of whichever parent is on duty and then staring at said parent with crossed eyes wondering why they are making such loud shushing sounds.

Q: Are you sleeping?

A: This mom really honed right in on that advice to sleep when the baby sleeps. All other advice I entertain and use at my convenience/need. But that little tid bit, that one I’ve been running with pretty hard. I usually sneak in a solid 2 hour nap when the baby takes her morning snoozes. Ryan prefers to spend his valuable naptime on the golf course. A choice I’ll never understand.

Q: Where does she sleep?:

A: Many places. We have this bassinet in our room used for her sweet sweet sleep chunks at night… her swing, bouncer, and pack n play for when mom is sleeping on the couch or trying desperately/failing to accomplish anything else… But mostly in people’s arms.

Exhibit A:Baby passed out sleeping

Mine, Ryan’s, Grandparents’, Visitors’, Neighbors’, Strangers’ (just kidding).  ALWAYS feeling the love this little one… Nice and cozy and comfortably in some especially loving embraces. Or just blatantly uncomfortably, passed out in an instant as shown above with limbs in weird places and not a care in the world. Whatever works Lydiebug.

Moral of the story: We are decidedly more appreciative of any and all sleeping hours than we have ever been and have officially joined the ranks of new parents everywhere living the nocturnal life and fighting to keep our eyes half as open as our little one’s.

I’ll leave you with this quote from my husband that has nothing to do with the rest of the post. He just overheard me laughing out loud…

You know what my favorite part of your blog is? That you absolutely crack yourself up.

Guilty. Usually guilty. I also bawl my eyes out when the writing gets sappy.

See you sooner than later if I live up to my campaign promise of daily-ish postings. Hold me to it.
